Penumbra

Dynamo Arts Association presents Penumbra. Six artists have assembled work for this exhibition that prominently address boundaries and transitions between dark and light. Through differing pictorial interpretations, darkness and light transverse their function as formal devices, and in doing so, construct conceptual and metaphorical narratives.

Within one's environment, transitions in quality of light shift and create ambiguity. The fleeting light of dusk, dawn, or in that of an eclipse, come to invoke a sense of mystery and dislocation. In these borders of twilight one can become lost, dislocated and disoriented from what was familiar in times of daylight. An object's meaning shifts, as differing qualities of light intermingle through its surrounding environment and across it surface. As one stares into the objects shadow, the positive space of that object and negative space provided of its shadow can come to switch roles. The shadow becomes the point of focus for the viewer. The viewer allegorically sits on the edge of that shadow, in the penumbra, peering in, constructing and imposing meaning from the blackness.
